The Buried Seed

"Listen carefully: Unless a grain of wheat is buried in the ground, dead to the world, it is never any more than a grain of wheat. But if it is buried, it will sprout and reproduce itself many times over. In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it is destroys that life. But if you let it go, RECKLESS in your love, you'll have it forever, real and eternal."

John 12:24-25, The Message.

Are we ready to suffer the fate of the buried seed? How many are willing to completely bury themselves in Christ, shutting out the light, the pollution, and the groping invasiveness of the world's light? The buried seed knows nothing but the nourishment of the dark soil around it, the moistness of the intimacy with Christ in the calm, secret place. When the seed surrenders to its fate of being buried in the heart of Jesus, it begins to crack open, letting the first light penetrate into its softened shell...

Reckless love. How many of us know this love? As Americans, we tend to be careful in our loving. We are not ready to let others penetrate our lives in a transforming way, because we like control. We like knowing what the results will be.

And yet, Christ in HIS economy demands monopoly. He wants a completely surrendered life. He wants utter and radical obedience. And He wants it NOW. Not yesterday, not tomorrow, but now, in the "Living Present."

Only then, in Radical, Reckless Loving, is Another World Possible.
